Built in 1900 the American hotel is Amsterdam most famous Art Nouveau hotel directly located on the lively Leidseplein. From its classic exterior with tower to stained glass windows to wall paintings in the interior, Art Nouveau archictectual and decorative features can be traced even in its rooms. The 174 rooms have been renovated in 2001 to suit the modern travellers needs. The Grand Cafe American also invites from Breakfast to Dinner under its arched roof decorated with Tiffany lamps. The Grand Cafe Americain opens its doors at 7 o'clock for breakfast, lunch, coffee and cake, and dinner can be enjoyed in its classical appearance under tiffany lamps and original wall paintings featuring scenes of Shakespeares " A Midsummer Night's Dream". On Sunday the lively Jazz Brunch is offered. High Tea parties can be enjoyed from 8 persons. The Bar American offer award winning cocktails or the favorite "biertje" with Dutch snacks. A choice of queen, king and twin rooms is available, and some rooms allow for a rollaway bed at a surcharge (limited availability). Arriving by car drive along the Highway A4 (E10), take exit ZAANSTAD, then exit OSDORP (S-106),turn right and flow road passing SURINAMEPLEIN, at this roundabout keep going straight. Turning into the left, cross the KOSTVERLORENVAART bridge, turn left on OVERTOOM. At the end of the OVERTOOM turn left into the STADTHOUDERSKADE. Cross the first bridge on the right and then the 2nd street MARNIXSTRAAT onto the Leidsekade.The hotel is then on your left.
The KLM shuttle bus to and from Schiphol airport stops only 50 meters from the hotel entrance and departs approx. every 20 minutes. Tickets can be purchased on the bus or with the Concierge. Trams 1,2,5 (coming from Central Station) and 6,7,10 stop directly in front of the hotel. Tickets can be bought on board or with the Concierge. |
